Angelique Kerber: “I have nothing to lose in the next match” – Tennis News
German tennis icon, Angelique Kerber, is on course to take on the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the semi-final of the BNP Paribas Open. She capsized the eighth ranked Chinese, Li Na, in the quarter-final stage
to book a date with the Belarusian. If she manages to oust her fellow semi-finalist in Indian Wells, she will become the first player to defeat the Belarusian, who is on a 21 game winning streak at the moment.
Kerber won her first match against Li in their fourth meeting. The previous three matches were played a couple of years back in 2010 and were won by then-inform Chinese star. Li has faced a terrible drop in the form and also struggled
to stay fit. She just turned 30-years-old on 26th February, last month.
The 19th ranked German started her year at Auckland in the ASB Classic tournament; made it to the semi-final stage of the tournament but lost to the Italian fourth seed, Flavia Pennetta. She reached the second semi-final
of 2012 in Moorilla Hobart International before being dumped in the third round of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.
Federation Cup tie with Czech Republic featured the likes of Kerber in the only round rubbers match against Lucie Hradecka. She registered a triumph to help her team stay in the contest. The first title to the German came in the
Open GDF Suez tournament. She outfoxed the second seed French tennis ace, Marion Bartoli, in the final to grab her maiden Women Tennis Association title this year.
She didn’t had a very successful tour of Doha; was ousted in the second round by the inferior ranked Bulgarian competitor, Tsvetana Pironkova, in the second round of the Qatar Total Open. After a short bad patch, she has once again
gained her form and all set to registered a record breaking triumph against Azarenka.
In a post-match interview after the quarter-final, she stated, “I have nothing to lose in the next match. I will go out there, try to play my tennis and focus on myself like today. But also I'm going to try to enjoy myself out
there, and try to beat her, of course.”
She will break in the Top-15 players of the world in the new edition of world ranking on Monday. It was something she wasn’t aware of until the interviewer told her on Wednesday. Everyone is waiting for a taxing semi-final on Saturday.
