Angelique Kerber accomplishes mission Istanbul qualification – Tennis News
World number six, Angelique Kerber, didn’t qualify for the semi-final of the China Open due to an injury-stricken defeat at the hands of the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, but she made sure that her classic three-setter
triumph over the 11th seed Dane star, Caroline Wozniacki, was good enough to earn her place in the season-end finale scheduled to be played at Istanbul.
On knowing the good news about her successful qualification for the masters series, the 24-year-old German confessed, “I'm very happy I get the chance to play the Masters at the end of the year - that was a goal of mine, and I'm
very happy for this. It shows I've played a very good season, and I'm going to try to continue this. Right now I am focused only on this tournament, and then I will go to Luxembourg to play more matches, and then I'll be ready for the WTA Championships in
Istanbul.”
Women Tennis Association’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stacey Allaster, welcomed the new entrants to the Top-8 battle at Istanbul. While conducting a press conference, Allaster stated, “I would like to congratulate Angelique,
Petra and Sara on qualifying for the WTA Championships. Angelique and Sara have achieved their career-best seasons.”
With the inclusion of Kerber in the list of eight elite players who will travel to Istanbul, the field has become pretty versatile this season. Four players had already made it into the season-end finale by the end of the US Open
Championships at New York. It included the likes of:
Victoria Azarenka - The reigning world number one
Maria Sharapova - The French Open Champion
Agnieszka Radwanska – Number one Pole star
Serena Williams - The second woman to complete the Career Gold Slam
Other players that have confirmed their places along with the inclusion of Kerber include:
Petra Kvitova – Former Wimbledon Champion
Sara Errani – The most improved player of the season
Li Na – Former French Open Champion
The field is set for all above listed player to kick-off their season-end finale title hunt in Istanbul from October 23 to 28. The tournament will take place Sinan Erdem Arena, one of the most beautiful tennis stadiums in the world.
Let’s hope the ankle injury of Kerber doesn’t hamper her campaign and possibly force her out of the competition before it officially begins. It will be a major setback for someone like the German who has bagged the most wins (62)
in 2012 than any other woman player.
