Angelique Kerber & Gallovits-Hall sail into the second round of 2011 Sony Ericson Open
Angelique Kerber of Germany defeated Romanian Edina Gallovits-Hall 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday to make it to the second round of 2011 Sony Ericson Open in United States.
The match was played on a highly competitive note as both players exchanged heavy blows throughout. The German broke early in the first set to ensure a positive start. She then held on to her serve games to lead the set score 1-0.
The second set tells a similar story as well. The German was as solid as a rock in her defense despite a strong counter-attack by Gallovits-Hall. Kerber kept breaking the serve at regular intervals and successfully completed the win in two sets.
The 23 year old tennis-pro looked in prime form in her opening match and played some breathtaking tennis creating wonderful opportunities for herself throughout the contest. She created very difficult angles for the challenger to cope with playing wide of
the court. She had a good control over her serve converting a good percentage of the points on her serve. She saved crucial break points with her formidable defense and was also the better of two players in the serve return department.
Kerber has enjoyed considerable success on the tour recently reaching her career high ranking of world number 45 in February 2011. She will be hoping to deliver goods against Tsvetana Pironkova of Belarus in her next match at the Women’s Tennis Association
Tournament. On the other hand Gallovits-Hall was gutted with her ordinary performance. She had a number of chances but failed to convert them and hence paid the price.
In another match Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain defeated Arantxa Rus of Holland 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 in a thrilling three setter.
The Spaniard started off well by taking the first set with the serve break however, she faced strong opposition in the second set and lost the set in the tie-breaker 6-7 (7). Lion then regrouped herself and showed exceptional temperament to fight back in
the decider. The 29 year old Spanish tennis-pro converted one of the break points in the final set to secure a place in the next round where she will take on Tsvetana Pironkova who received a bye into the second round.
Lino has been in excellent form over the last few months winning second WTA title of her career at 2011 Bogota and then a quarterfinal appearance at Acapulco. Following her consistent performance she was able to climb back into the top 50 WTA players and
will be looking to continue her dream run on the tour.
