Angelique Kerber blasts her way past Lara Arruabarrena-Veci in round two – China Open 2012
German number one, Angelique Kerber, exhibited another display of sheer dominance and class to clear the second round of the China Open on Tuesday afternoon. The world number six had no difficulties at all to brush aside the bleak resistance from the Spanish qualifier, Lara Arruabarrena-Veci, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the pre-quarter-final round of the WTA Premier Series event in Beijing, China.
The 24-year-old German was facing 88th ranked Veci for the first time in her professional career and had no trouble at all to get under her skin. She barely lost two games in the entire matchup to drive the 20-year-old Spanish youngster out of the event with utter authority.
Riding her career-best ranking at the moment, Kerber has been the real heartthrob of German tennis throughout the running season. She has already bagged two WTA championship titles this year and her strong beginning at the China Open will certainly raise her confidence bar to a whole new level.
Kerber took off the match in emphatic fashion, breaking the Spanish serve in the very first game and holding her own serve to go 2-0 up straight away. Veci could bag another serve game before suffering another break of serve from the fifth seed German in the fifth game and fell to a 1-5. The German diva carried on with her impetus and comprehensively served out of the opener at 6-2.
The following set was an all-German show, with Kerber absolutely manhandling the Spaniard underdog and hitting her all round the court like a minnow. The fifth seed broke her opponent’s serve in every single serve game, nailing three break points on the trot to rocket away to victory in style. She posted her 60th victory of the running season with a bagel and booked a spot in the third round of the China Open. A total of 111 points were played in the match, with Kerber bagging away 67 and her opponent lagging far behind with a mere 44.
Kerber will next face the winner of the contest between the 10th seed Dane, Caroline Wozniacki and the Taiwanese underdog, Su-Wei Hsieh.
