Angelique Kerber breaks into the Top-10 – Tennis Special
German number one, Angelique Kerber, stunned the Czech tennis ace, Petra Kvitova, in the quarter-final of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia at Rome, Italy. With this triumph, she breaks into the Top-10 players of the world as well.
Her terrific season has finally given her the place she deserves.
In a post-match interview yesterday, she stated, "Petra played great tonight, but I was just trying to focus on myself and fight. We played a few weeks ago in Stuttgart and she beat me but the conditions were different this time
- this was outdoors, and nights match too."
After knowing her new achievement in the professional career, she stated, "It sounds very good, and it's a dream to be in the Top 10, of course, but I'm not thinking about this. I just try to give my best out there and try to win
matches. That's what I'm doing, and that's what I love."
Kerber further added, "Maria is a great player and has been playing very well this year. I'll go out there, try my best and just have fun. I have nothing to lose." She was talking about her semi-final contest against the Russian
number one, Maria Sharapova, who is also the defending champion. It will be another world class matchup especially considering that both ladies are in terrific run of form.
Putting some light on the season of the German, one can easily witness an upward trend since the start. She reached the semi-final stage of the season-opener in Auckland; ousting the two superior ranked compatriots at that time,
Julia Goerges and Sabine Lisicki, on her way. She entered Moorilla Hobart International and advanced into the last four before being plonked by the German booming starlet, Mona Barthel.
Sharapova stood in her way in the third round of the Australian Open and ended her cameo. However, the German returned to the tennis circuit in Open GDF Suez and stunned everyone by claiming her maiden title this year. She defeated
the top seed Sharapova in the quarter-final and trounced the French number one, Marion Bartoli, in the final.
The tour of Doha was not impressive for her but her startling performance in Indian Wells witnessed some marvellous performances that helped her to speed her way into the semi-final stages where the number one Belarusian, Victoria
Azarenka, ousted her to end her title dream.
She faced a first round exit in Miami but flew to Copenhagen and surprised the Dane number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final to strip her of the title at her home soil. Quarter-final in Stuttgart and third round exit at Madrid
Open enhanced her ranking to world number 11. She will be the new Top-10 player in the new listing on Monday after reaching the semi-final in Rome.
Surprise packages from Germany keeps coming every year; last season it was the beautiful tennis lady, Sabine Lisicki, who bullied her way into the Top-20 players from world number 200. It is good news for the German fans especially
for Kerber who is the only active German in the Top-10 list.
