Angelique Kerber cripples Jelena Jankovic to enter final showdown – e-Boks Open 2012
Second seed, Angelique Kerber, slaughtered the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, with a breadstick at the e-Boks Open 2012 on Saturday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 score line against the 27-year-old to cruise into the title-round at this indoor hard
court event held in Farum, north of Copenhagen, Denmark.
The high flying German showed spectacular skills and abilities to outgun the third seeded Serb in one hour and 18 minutes. Encountering each other for the first time, Kerber not only booked a final spot at Farum Arena but also took lead in the head-to-head
series by 1-0 against the Serbian number two.
"First of all, Jelena is an amazing player. I was surprised I was able to win that comfortably," the ecstatic German was quoted. "I've been getting more used to this surface, which helped a lot. I was very focused and tried to keep myself in every point."
Kerber stormed into this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament and after earning two breaks of serve, she jumped to a 5-1 lead. The German then slid her serve once more and bagged the opener with an assuring 6-2 victory.
Ranked 15th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Kerber kept momentum rolling into the following set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game to leap at 2-0. After Jankovic held her serve in the third game, the German blasted flat groundstrokes
from her box of tricks and wiped out the proceeding four games in a row. She was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed in three out of eight break chances to pocket the breadstick.
Next challenge for Kerber is the Danish number one and the world number six, Caroline Wozniacki.
"I have gained a lot of confidence with today's win and I´m looking forward to the final against Caroline," the German said about her next match-up. "It will be tough both physically and mentally, as we know each other very well."
The Dane lost her serve once but capitalised on four out of five break opportunities to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 success against Croatia’s Petra Martic.
