Angelique Kerber dismisses Ayumi Morita in the quarters - Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2013
World number six, Angelique Kerber, dismissed the 46th ranked Japanese professional, Ayumi Morita, in the quarter-final clash during the Whirlpool Monterrey Open on Friday. She registered straight sets victory 6-2, 6-1
at the hard courts and sent a strong message for the Russian superstar, Maria Kirilenko, who will face her in the last-four clash that will take place on Saturday.
Kerber stated about the match proceedings, “It wasn't an easy match but I was playing much better than yesterday. My serve was much better than last night and I was feeling really good out there. I'm happy to reach the semis.”
Previously, the two athletes had faced each other on four different occurrences and it was the 25-year-old German who reigned supreme over her rival in the recent two encounters having lost the opening two face-offs that were contested
way back in 2007-2008.
Talking about the tournament, she said, “I got a very nice welcome when I came here. Everybody has been so friendly and so nice, the organization has been really good, and the Tournament Director has been great. I feel very welcome
in Monterrey.”
The 46th ranked Japanese was unable to handle the pressure from the word go. The hard-hitting of the left-handed German cleared the way in the fourth game when she got the first breakthrough. She kept on the onslaught
and occupied another breakpoint before closing out the opening set in quick succession.
Kerber started the second set with another break of the serve and stretched the lead to 4-0. She was cruising along and well on course to register a bagel but some respect was restored by the 23-year-old Japanese who held her serve
to keep the set alive a bit longer. However, Morita couldn’t hold her opponent for long and the German reigned supreme over her with utmost determination.
She added about the semi-final clash, “I hope I can play like I did today. I need to be ready, 100%.” It has been a topsy turvy season for the German but she will try her best to break the duck of titles at Monterrey especially
considering the form that she is enjoying.
