Angelique Kerber ecstatic at her maiden title success in Paris – Tennis News
German tennis icon, Angelique Kerber, defeated the hot-favourite, Marion Bartoli of France, to register her maiden Women Tennis Association (WTA) championship title. She waited for that for a long time and finally her efforts
were rewarded on Sunday. She was extremely ecstatic on achieving yet another milestone in her professional career. She deserved this long time ago but it doesn’t matter for her.
Expressing her delight at winning her first WTA title, she stated, “It means a lot for me. I know that I believe in myself now and that I can play with the top players. It's my first title and I will enjoy it for sure in
the coming days. Obviously, it hurts to be an in-form player for a long period of time, performing extremely well but not winning any title.”
French tennis icon, Bartoli also praised her counterpart’s performance in the match and stated, “I gave everything I had and Angelique did the same. You have to know when to accept defeat, though. It's what sport is all about.
I didn't fluff my lines when it came to the final and I was simply beaten by a better player.”
Kerber played seven semi-finals in the row but wasn’t able to find that extra instinct that would have inched her step closer to her maiden championship title. This time she got that opportunity; clubbed it with both hands
by overpowering the superior ranked French in a gruelling three-setter. She won the first set in a tie-break before losing the second to her opponent. An initial outbreak in the final set earned a crucial four games lead upfront for the German. She had a couple
of breakpoints under her belt that were enough to seal the win for her.
Further adding on her delight on winning her first title after seven semi-finals in a row, she stated, “Yesterday was my seventh semi in a row. So I was very happy that I was in the final today.” She went out there with one
thing on her mind; to win the contest. It was one of the most taxing encounters for both contestants but the confidence and willpower to clinch the title did the job for the German.
The next task for the German is to perform well in the Qatar Ladies Open tournament and possibly gobble up 250 points and massive prize money of $2,168,400. The tournament will be played 13-19 February.
