Angelique Kerber ends Caroline Wozniacki’s winning streak to lift the title – e-Boks Open 2012
Seeded at number two in the tournament draws, Germany’s Angelique Kerber finally blemished the perfect record of former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, at the e-Boks Open. The 14th ranked German devastated the
two-time defending champion in the final of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Sunday night.
Kerber took one hour and 38 minutes to wrap up her championship victory with twin-sets, 6-4, 6-4, stunning the world number six opponent in style. Wozniacki hasn’t dropped a single set at e-Boks Open since the 2010 semi-final and
was riding a flawless record this season as well. The second seed German stepped on the indoor hard courts of Copenhagen as the underdog opponent but it was her sheer brilliance and class which took Wozniacki by surprise.
Wozniacki has been victorious against Kerber in their prior two encounters and she was the hot favourite for winning her third successive e-Boks Open title on her home soil. Her hopes were brutally spoiled by the hard-hitting German,
who cruised through both of the sets to register her23rd victory of the running year. Kerber won her second championship title of the 2012 WTA season, as she also lifted the Open GDF Suez trophy by defeating Marion Bartoli earlier.
Although the scores suggest a pretty one-sided affair, it was a stiff battle between two tennis divas. Wozniacki fought really well but couldn’t convert the crucial opportunities she had in the matchup, eventually finishing on
the losing side. She had 14 break points in the contest but could merely cash in four of them to remain at a disadvantage throughout the game. On the other hand, Kerber nailed six out of nine break points and clinched 30 out of 47 first serve points en route
to victory.
"It was amazing to play in front of this crowd, even though most of them supported Caroline," Kerber said. "It was a great atmosphere and it was good fun to play. If I lost the match, it's okay against her. It made me take more
chances and I'm glad it worked out. It has been a fantastic week for me here. I love playing here and today I played a really good match against Caroline. I'm happy I was able to raise my level for the last few matches here and I've gained a lot of confidence.
I'm very motivated to continue working hard. This just adds to it."
In the doubles category, the Japanese duo of Kimiko Date-Krumm and Rika Fujiwara took down the combination of Sofia Arvidsson and Kaia Kanepi to take the gold.
