Angelique Kerber ends second in the race for the German Athlete of the Year – Tennis News
A memorable season in 2012 for the fifth ranked German powerhouse, Angelique Kerber, yielded her a second place in the German Athlete of 2012 Award ceremony. It was the second straight year where a tennis star has ended as runners-up
in the event. Last year, it was the tall German tennis icon, Andrea Petkovic, who clinched the same award.
One of the world’s best Formula 1 drivers, Sebastian Vettel, was called on the stage to present the award to the 24-year-old German who is enjoying her career-best ranking at the moment. Vettel warmly greeted the German diva; presented
her the award and also invited her to the Grand Prix Formula 1 race scheduled to be held in Germany in July. Kerber gladly accepted the invitation and stated, “No matter what I do on this day, I'll come for sure”.
Kerber received 1,545 votes from the sports journalist all across Germany. She came second to none other than one of the most esteemed goalkeepers in the world of football, Manuel Neuner, who received 3,368 votes altogether.
The German superstar showed her class right from the start of the latest season. She dispatched two seeded compatriots, Julia Goerges (seeded fifth) and Sabine Lisicki (top seed), in the second round and quarter-final of the ASB
Classic respectively.
She carried the momentum at the Moorilla Hobart International and reached the second successive semi-final of the season. She exited the Australian Open at the third round but went to Paris and conquered the trophy at the Open
GDF Suez; toppled the top seed Maria Sharapova and the second seed Marion Bartoli on her way.
Kerber clinched her second title at Copenhagen where she rocked the top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who was the defending champion as well, in the final of the event. She reached the semi-final at Rome and played in the quarter-final
at the French Open. She reached the final of AEGON International and the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships; coupled it with a quarter-final exit at the Olympics.
The German reached the fourth round of the US Open in New York and lost in the semis at Tokyo. She failed to win a single battle in the WTA Championships at Istanbul but it didn’t hurt her cause at all as the German secured a majestic
62-22 record in 2012; best of her career to date.
