Angelique Kerber gets rid of Bojana Jovanovski in 1st round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
German Angelique Kerber got rid of Serbian Bojana Jovanovski in the opening draw of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. On outdoor hard courts the two battled it out for just fifty minutes and emerging victorious was qualifier Kerber
in straight sets of 6-1, 6-0.
The two had initially met in 2010 during the Fes Open which was held in Morocco. Battling it out on clay courts the German took the completive edge over the Serb to lead the head-to-head with 1-0. This was the second time the two
were meeting in their professional careers and was an opportunity for Jovanovski to avenge her loss. However, Jovanovski failed to avail the chance given to her by fate and lost the match giving Kerber a 2-0 lead over her.
The first round of the match was opened by Kerber, as she had won the toss and successfully went on to holding her serve in the first game. Kerber was first to roll the score board in the opening game, she then went on to breaking
her opponent in the second game. However, Jovanovski was not going to let the qualifier take away the opening set from her that easily and she broke back in the third game.
Unfortunately for Jovanovski that was the only game she could bag because after that Kerber took a notch higher in her play and broke her adversary in the fourth game. Her next sagacious move was to serve-break-serve and as she
did exactly that, she clogged the opening set with a breadstick victory.
Throughout the opening set Kerber only dropped one game to secure her victory of the first set. She not only had excellent total service points but also a good return which assisted her in obtaining twice as many points as her
rival’s.
As Kerber powered through the first set, she set the tone for the second and dominated the second set from the very first game by breaking Jovanovski. Kerber was on a roll and as she held serve, she broke the Serb again in the
third game. Leading with a 3-0 score, Kerber again won a game on her serve but did not allow Jovanovski a single hold.
Jovanovski was furious with her opponent as she was unable to set her rhythm and by the fifth game the Serb again double faulted to endorse a game to her already winning opponent. Serving for the match was the impressive German
qualifier, who smashed a backhand down the line and winner to secure a bagel victory.
Kerber, who has won eleven of her last thirteen matches managed to advance to the second round of the event where she will be facing Polish Agnieszka Radwanska.
