Angelique Kerber ousts Chanelle Scheepers in 1stround – Texas Open 2011
World number 107 Angelique Kerber outplayed World number 82 Chanelle Scheepers by bouncing back from a set down in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 08 seconds at the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas. Kerber was able to lock a place
in the second round of the Texas Open 2011 with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The first set was initiated by Kerber who smashed an ace and struck 3 double faults, while Scheepers had struck one double fault less than her adversary and even though, she was not able to smash an ace, she had managed to get
50% of her first serves on target.
The South African (Scheepers) got an edge because she was able to secure a 67% win in her first serve and hence, bagged a total of 15 out of 30 points making it a 50% win in her total service points and hence, the German (Kerber)
was also able to play her adversary’s shots and bagged 50% of her total returns in the set.
With a below average serve, the 23-year-old German (Kerber) was  unable to gain an upper hand and hence was only able to achieve 17 out of 36 points, making it 47% win in her total service points. Whereas, the 27 year-old Scheepers
was able to recoil most of the shots aimed at her by her rival because of a strong back hand and thus achieved 19 out of 36 points to round the total return win at 53%.
Scheepers won the set because she was able to accomplish 52% of her total service points against Kerber, who was able to muster a 48% win of her total set points.
To the crowds surprise in the second set Scheepers nose-dived in her performance, it seemed the prayers of Kerber’s fans were finally answered and she found her old rhythm in the match.
Bagging 16 out of 26 points in her total service points, making it 62% of her total serves was a marked difference from the previous first set. Kerber asserted more power into her serves which promoted her performance, while her
South African adversary was only able to respond to a few of  Kerber’s serve and hence, won an appalling 38% of her total return points.
Although, the German was unable to save a break point, she was able to win 50% of her break points, which meant that she broke her opponent thrice, while Scheepers only broke her opponent’s serve once. Thus, gaining the competitive
edge that she required, she was able to bag the second.
As the 23 year-year old hacked this set away from her opponent with a total set score of 59% win, both the players had tied on their set scores, thus the third set was the determining factor.
Although, Scheepers had a consistent performance in both the first and second serves, she was unable to gain the edge as Kerber had secured a walloping 72% win of her first serves which alleviated her overall service score in the
third set to a commendable 59% win.
In their returns both had a mediocre score but because Kerber was able to win 3 out of 4 break points she got the extra edge and therefore, won the third set and the match.
