Angelique Kerber ousts Venus Williams to qualify for the third round – US Open 2012 
World number six, Angelique Kerber, disposed the former American number one, Venus Williams, in the second round of the US Open 2012 on Thursday. She smashed 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, triumph against the local challenger and confidently
marched into the third round of the Grand Slam held at the hard courts of Queen, New York.
Kerber, in a post match interview told the reports, “Venus was fighting in the second set and played great shots in the important moments. I couldn't do anything. In the third she was up, and I just fought every point. I
had in my mind matches where I was down match ball and won, so I knew I could change it.”
She further added, “I wasn't thinking of the time or the score, I was just trying to win points. I knew this was not an easy second round. She's such a great player. But it was an unbelievable feeling to play her out there.
I've won here, so it's very special.”
The opening set witnessed a series of break points and the 32-year-old presented a considerably poor performance with a sloppy start. Although she equalized the scores to 2-all initially, her graph picked a declining pace
later one. The German convicted to secure the lead and providentially managed to dominate the set with a 6-2 score line.
The German number one, Kerber got a significant break in the second set and marked her 2-0 lead. The 24-year-old German participant proved to be tough challenge against her rival but Williams equalized the scores four times
in the entire set. Regardless of her initial loss, Williams successfully capitalized 20 out of 34 first serve points, nailing down four of 10 break serves offered. In comparison, the German contender followed the lead and bagged three of 10 the points. The
American took hold of the favourable instance and clinched a 7-5 success to level the match at one-all.
The left-hander German got back in action in the third set with a high first serve percentage of 70, snatching 19 of 21 first serve points. She dropped her serve once in the set but came back with two cracking break points
to wrap up victory at 7-5 in the end.
Next challenge for Kerber will be against Olga Govortsova who rallied past Johanna Konta in the second round of the tournament.
