Angelique Kerber praises Kim Clijsters – Tennis News
German number one, Angelique Kerber, slaughtered the former world number one, Kim Clijsters, in her last days at professional tennis. It was the fourth round clash that witnessed a big booming win for the eighth seed German; registering
scores of 6-1, 6-1.
However, she was very complimentary towards her opponent and stated, “She's (Clijsters) a great player, she's a legend also for me, I think. She won a lot of Grand Slams. I know that I need to play until the last point because
if I don't, I know if I make her a little chance that she will take it. And also, doesn't matter if it's 5-0 in the second, I know that I need to play the last point to win this match. I think that's, yeah, that's her thing, that she's a fighter. I knew this
before."
There is no doubt that Clijsters is one of the best players of modern era but considering her iterative injuries that kept her out of play for a long period of time damaged her game a lot. She was ranked world number one by the
end of the Australian Open, last year, when she lifted the trophy. However, she entered in Wimbledon as world number 53. The slump in the ranking clearly shows her lack of ability to play proper tennis.
The Belgian tennis ace returned to the tennis circuit in the Australian Open this January after a major injury layoff and then stayed out of play again for quite some time. She made a comeback in Wimbledon and outplayed some tough
competitors like Jelena Jankovic and Vera Zvonareva. So, it has been a satisfactory end to a promising campaign for the player who will retire by the end of the year’s fourth Grand Slam Championship, the US Open.
Kerber, on the other hand, will contest a match against her compatriot, Sabine Lisicki, to fight for a place in the last four of the tournament. The 15th seed Lisicki outfoxed the reigning world number one, Maria Sharapova,
in the third round to register the biggest upset of the tournament on the eve of Monday. So, it will be an enthralling battle between the two Germans.
