Angelique Kerber scuttles past Roberta Vinci in round one - Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
World number 14, Angelique Kerber, ousted the 18th ranked Italian, Roberta Vinci, in the first round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournament at her home soil, Stuttgart, Germany. It was an easy straight sets victory
6-2, 6-3 for the German star who won the maiden head-to-head contest between the two players.
Nothing was going right for the Italian who failed to make any sort of impact at the clay court on Tuesday. She only survived 67 minutes before the local queen confirmed the second round spot in the tournament against the winner
of all-former world number ones contest, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic.
Kerber is fuming in with confidence in recent times and has bagged two titles this year including the recent triumph in Copenhagen where she defeated the defending champion, Wozniacki, on her home ground to take the crown. Vinci
was playing good tennis in the doubles category but hasn’t been able to stamp her authority in one on one matchup.
It was a great start for the German who bagged the first four points of the match to register an easy serve hold before converting the second breakpoint opportunity of the match to her name. She gusted away to a lead of 3-0 in
no time and pocketed another serve game and speeded away to a lead of 4-1.
Vinci lost another breakpoint but fought back to win the break back in the seventh game. However, the cameo from the Italian was over in quick succession as the local won four of the last six points played in the set to bag the
third breakthrough.
The 24-year-old German didn’t ease pressure on rival and kept on the onslaught. She won the breakpoint in the fourth game and took a resounding lead of 4-1 in the second set as well. It was almost over for the Italian who was in
no position to make a comeback from that stage. Both players capitalized on their serves and an early breakthrough helped the German to cruise into the second round of the tournament.
Earlier in the day, the in-form Aussie superstar, Samantha Stosur, ousted the Chinese representative, Shuai Peng, in straight sets. Anna Chakvetadze fell in the trap of her fellow qualifier, Alize Cornet, and Iveta Benesova bowed
to the seventh seed French, Marion Bartoli, in the their respective matches. Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova will play their first matches on Wednesday.
