Angelique Kerber thrashes Olga Govortsova in 2nd round – HP Japan Open 2011
Third seeded German Angelique Kerber thrashed the Belarusian Olga Govortsova in the second round of the HP Japan Open 2011. Battling for one hour and seventeen minutes on the outdoor hard courts of Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan, the third seeded Kerber got the better of the Belarusian in straight sets of 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday the 12th of October 2011.
Serving confidently for the initial round of the match was Kerber and she got off to great start by holding her serve in the first game and then as she capitalized on an early break, she took a lead of 2-0. As the two players held serve in the third and the fourth game, Kerber had increased her lead to 3-1 and then 4-1 by the end of the fifth game.
During the last two games, Kerber again benefitted from a breakpoint as her adversary double faulted. The third seeded German served for the opening set in the seventh game and smashed a few backhand crosscourt shots to bag an easy breadstick victory of the opening game.
Angelique Kerber was unbreakable throughout the entire set and as she capitalized on two breakpoints, she took the competitive edge in the match. After taking a beating in the first set Govortsova tried to muster a good score against Kerber in the second set but she was unsuccessful in doing so and eventually lost the second set as well.
Opening for the second set was Govortsova, who initiated the scoreboard to 2-0 by the end of the second game as she not only held her serve in the first game but also capitalized on a breakpoint opportunity in the second game. However, Kerber was not to lose her edge and she quickly held serve and broke back to equalize the score at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game.
Third seeded German speedily moved into take the lead by breaking her adversary and then holding serve in the sixth game. The two then broke each other one after the other in the following two games and the scoreboard at progressed to 5-3. Kerber was now only a game away from reserving a spot in the third round of the event and as Govortsova served, she double faulted endorsing the match to her German adversary.
Next up for the German is the Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn in the third round of the event.
