Angelique Kerber trounces Sara Errani in the second round – Hobart International 2012
German world number 31, Angelique Kerber, crashed the 47th ranked italian, Sara Errani, in the second round of Hobart International, contested on hard courts on Tuesday. Both players contested for just over an hour before
fourth seed Kerber ousted her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Crowd gathered in considerable numbers with the anticipation of a close encounter, for the proximity of rankings but it completely turned out to be the other way round.
The German was enjoying a terrific run of form, having lost just three encounters from her last nine, whereas her opponent registered four victories from her last nine matchups. It was another opportunity for the Italian to gain
some momentum and explore good form to help her in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open but she failed to deliver anything interesting.
It was the first encounter between the two players and it was completely dominated by the fourth seed German. She ignited the match with a successful serve game and broke in the second game to double her lead. Such a breathtaking
start to the match helped her build some momentum right from the beginning, holding her serve in the third game and ousted her opponent in the fourth to break for the second time in a row.
Errani was completely down and out as she prepared herself for the fifth game; failed to reply the onslaught of her opponent and trailed with five games to nil in the first set. A mere game she could enjoy the flare of triumph
came in the sixth game when she held her serve to get off the mark. Kerber wasted no time in clinching the last game, as she marched into the second set with a numerical and psychological advantage.
24-years-old, Errani, started the second set in promising manner and held her serve upfront, stunningly breaking in the second game to take 2-0 lead. The German was not going to allow her opponent to run off with the show; she
broke in the third game and held her serve in the fourth to level the scores at 2-2. Fourth seed broke in the fifth game to take a lead and consolidated her position with another break in the seventh game.
The Italian couldn’t spare anything for herself in the remaining games and lost the match at 2-6. Kerber moved into the quarters and will play against the Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
