Angelo Lozano and Alejandro Moreda secure spots in Round 2 at Arica World Star Tour
Mexico’s Angelo Lozano and Puerto Rico’s Alejandro Moreda prevailed in their respective Round 1 (Round of 80) heats at the Arica World Star Tour, the latest 3-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event presented by Maui and Sons, which went down
at El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Wednesday, June 13.
With his success in the seventh heat of Round 1, Lozano advanced through into the second round (Round of 64), while Chile’s Cristian Merello accompanied him due to his runner-up position. Ecuador’s Israel Barona and Chile’s Miguel Angel Abarca failed to
make the Round 2 cut after finishing in third and fourth position respectively.
Moreda took out the eighth heat to confirm his spot in the next round. Chile’s Cristian Lopez successfully extended his life in the event as well after earning a second-place finish. Peru’s Gabriel Aramburu and Argentina’s Diego Conti got ejected from the
contention for the event title following their bottom-two finish.
The demanding surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site put the skills and experience of up-and-comers t test as they competed against each other to get their hands on a prize cheque of up to $55,000 and coveted ASP ranking points that were
on offer.
The seventh heat turned out to be a low-scoring affair, with all four surfers in the bout struggling to tame the waves.
Under the challenging circumstances, Lozano’s wave-score of 2.00 and 2.35 for a heat-total of 4.35 points turned out to be more than sufficient to seal the fate of the four-man battle in his favour.
Merello and Barona finished with an equal two-wave total of 2.60 points. However, the Chilean surfer’s higher single-wave score of 1.60 against Barona’s 1.40 put him in runner-up place and add him to the Round 2 line-up, while pushing the latter to third
place and consequently into the danger zone.
Abarca completely succumbed to the conditions, managing to collect just one 0.20-point ride during the course of the heat. The weak performance led to his elimination from the competition.
The quality of waves and performances did not turn out to be any better in the eighth heat. It only took Moreda a combined wave-total of 5.15 points to claim victory and thus advance into the next round.
Lopez collected a couple of scores in the two-point range to finish with a heat-total of 5.05 points, consequently advancing through into the next round as well.
Aramburu scored a 1.25 and 3.75 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 5.00 points, while Conti rounded out the bottom-position for a heat-total of 3.30 points.
