Sri Lankans were dealt a major blow after their talented all-rounder, Angelo Mathews, was ruled-out from the on-going Asia Cup tournament due to a calf injury.
The 24-year-old vice captain is suffering the same problem which prevented him from playing the finals of the recently concluded Commonwealth Bank series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
The Lankans are already facing problems in their on-going campaign as many of their key players looking jaded after a hectic time Down Under. Furthermore, the absence of Thisara Perera, another all-rounder, has also put the team under considerable pressure
in naming a balanced playing XI.
"The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn't pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home," said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397.
There are also reports about an injury to right-arm fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 struck imposing centuries
to help their side claim an impressive 50-run win.
“Malinga played through injury in the final two matches of the CB series, so we decided to give him a break yesterday. Yesterday he bowled a bit (in the nets), he will be bowling today as well, and after his bowling session we will take a call on him tomorrow,”
said the Lankan skipper.
Jayawardene further shared that Malinga will most likely be included in the team for the upcoming games as his side is already desperately in need of a win, and is counting on the spearhead pacer to make his presence felt in the absence of other key players.
Jayawardene also commented that Mathews is flying back home where he will be treated by specialists so that he can join the squad for their upcoming two-Test match home series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, starting March 26.
It was expected that the selectors were keen to send the best possible replacement for the injured all-rounder but given the short nature of the tournament, they resisted the temptation.
The Lankans will now need to pick a possible replacement from the current squad, which is all set to lock horns against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 on Thursday March 15, 2012, at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
