http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913 ready to replace Mahela Jayawardene – Cricket News Update
While expressing his readiness to take over the captaincy from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397, Sri Lankan all-rounder, Angelo Mathews, feels that the decision still rests with the selectors.
"I think that's totally up to the selectors - if they think I'm ready for the captaincy, I'm ready," Mathews said. "It doesn't really matter for now because Mahela's been a great captain for years and I think he's been serving the country for decades. But
if the selectors think I'm ready - it's up to them."
As his side departed for a tough tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, Jayawardene openly declared his desire to assess his future as captain. He then made it clear that he will relinquish his duties as the team’s leader after the series concludes late next month, but offered
his availability as a batsman in all formats of the game.
While a replacement has not been named, it is likely that the Lankans are eager to give that role to a younger player in a bid to secure the team’s future. Mathews has been the obvious choice for some time now, after being given the vice-captaincy duties
in July last year.
After Jayawardene quit the post in 2009, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 was then handed over the arm band, as the management seemed reluctant in naming
an inexperienced person.
His tenure did not go as planned, which further forced the board to call upon the seasoned Jayawardene to steady the Lankan ship amidst a poor stretch of results, both on and off the field.
Having helped the team find their feet in international cricket over the past 12 months, Jayawardene felt that the time was right to step down. Mathews, who has ably displayed his all-round prowess over the past 18 months, feels ready to make that step up,
having learned a lot from the senior players during his time.
"When I initially got into the team, there were so many captains. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ST-Jayasuriya-c2567 was there, and now we have Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela. They teach us a lot and we can always go back to them to ask questions, and they're always willing to help
out. There's a lot we can learn from Mahela."
