Angelo Matthews to be used as a specialist batsman in the future – Cricket News update
The Sri Lankan all-rounder, Angelo Matthews, will not be playing the first Test match against England, scheduled to start on Monday 26th of May 2012 at Galle, due to a calf injury. It is a big blow for the Sri Lankan team and the player who would
have been eager to put his injury woes behind him, and make a comeback into the national squad.
Matthews has been injury plagued, and the current calf injury ruled him out of the finals of last month’s Commonwealth Bank tri-series, along with missing the recently concluded Asia Cup tournament that was held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
There has been a lot of promise attached to Matthews due to his good batting skills and being more than handy with the ball. His abilities earned him the vice-captaincy role for the Islanders, but being out of the team on a consistent basis has made the
selectors think and his role of supporting http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TT-Samaraweera-c2712.
His future as an all-rounder been put into doubt by the Sri Lankan selectors, especially by chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashantha-Lakdasa-Francis-de-Mel-c46253 who said, "I don't think we can use Mathews as an allrounder in the future," and he further added, "Mathews has some problem with his
legs and it is very unlikely he will bowl much. We have to look at him purely as a batsman."
This will come as a big blow to the Sri Lankan team who are playing a Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LPC-Silva-c1848, a middle-order batsman, who made a century against England earlier this week, for the
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Development XI, in a warm up game.
Speaking ahead of the first Test, and giving hints of the playing XI, Mel said, "The team management will have to take a call on who should bat at no. 7," and he added, "It is between regular wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LD-Chandimal-c1831, who has
not kept wickets for some time."
Angelo Matthews will be missed but the all-rounder has to get over his injury woes before he can cement a place in the Lankan team again.
