Angelo Que shares the second position at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters on day one
Angelo Que of Philippines carded a two-under par 70 on Thursday, to take a share of the lead, at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club.
It was overall a good performance shown by the Filipino, as the course conditions really challenged the participants in the opening round.
The difficult layout of the course, combined with the strong winds blowing in the area, did not allow the players to make accurate shots throughout the day.
Que was among the players who struggled while making shots off the tee. In total, he managed to hit only three fairways.
Yet, he did not let his poor driving technique overhaul his overall form in the recent times. He tried to offset the driving inaccuracy with a good display of the game with his irons.
Despite making a number of shots from the roughs, he hit 14 greens in regulation and registered his name among the only 12 players who broke the par mark.
He now settles four strokes behind the leader Lien Chi-Wei of Chinese Taipei, who recorded an impressive six-under par 66.
“I’m very happy with the way I played,” he said. “I only hit three fairways but hit 14 greens. I’m pretty happy shooting under par under these windy conditions”.
“I can say it is a condition where you hit one bad drive or shot and the ball can end up thirty or forty yards left or right because of the wind. You got to hit pretty good tee shots and know what you are doing,” he explained.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he also stated that he could have posted a way better score on the leaderboard. However, his putter did not help him out, as he missed a number of easy putts during the round.
He stated, “It was pretty much a straight forward round. It is possible (shooting a 66). I missed four or five short putts for birdie or I could have shot six-under as well”.
Anirban Lahiri of India, who is currently looking forward to returning to his form, carded a one-under par 71 and shared the seventh spot on the leaderboard.
