Angelo Santana batters Justin Savi in a non-title bout to collect swift knockout win – Boxing News
Angelo Santana, the WBA Fedecaribe light welterweight champion, successfully defended his undefeated streak against Justin Savi, the former WBC Silver featherweight champion, by knocking him out in the fourth round of the 10-round bout held on June 23, 2012.
The duo met on the fight card organised and promoted by Don King of Don King Productions, co-headlining the pay-per-view. The ring for the extravaganza was set up at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino situated in Hollywood, Florida, United States.
The showdown also witnessed Tony Grano in a non-title bout against DaVarryl Williamson, headlining the fight card. Angelo, 24, did swift work of Justin and outsmarted the Benin proud in almost all the facets of the sport.
Santana was coming off a 12-bout win streak and was totally ready to take on the right-handed Justin but to his surprise Savi, during the bout , shifted to the southpaw stance creating a bit difficulty for the Cuban proud.
The bout instantly went in favour of Angelo when, due to a first round head crash, Savi received a deep cut under his right eye. Santana, also known as ‘La Cobra’, progressed to capitalise the injury and started pounding Justin’s right eye.
During the first two rounds, Savi, also known as ‘Le Vodou’, seemed to be just at the receiving end as he was unable to counter Angelo’s speedy jabs that kept on battering his already injured and bleeding right eye. In the third round, Santana almost manhandled
Savi and threw him on the ring floor by connecting a right fist.
The aggressive Angelo, realising that his target has softened, moved in for the kill. With sheer force, Santana unleashed a barrage of jabs pushing Savi to the ring corner.
The referee eventually intervened since Justin was unable to defend himself as a result, the bout was put to a halt and Angelo declared as the winner via technical knockout. After the bout, while sharing his thoughts, Angelo commented that he was a bit confused
at Savi adopting the southpaw stance.
Santana stated, “I was very happy with my performance tonight. I didn’t know my opponent was going to switch to southpaw on me. I trained for a right-hander but it turned out well at the end. He kept coming in and we kept butting heads from the opening round.
That happened because he kept changing his stance. Savi was a very strong fighter tonight but I trained for 12 rounds and I was able to stop him early.”
This was Angelo’s 10th knockout and 13th career win whereas Justin has received his second career loss.
