Angie Akers and Nicole Branagh meeting Czech Republic in FIVB Beach Volleyball A1 Grand Slam
The American duo of Angie Akers and Nicole Branagh has not yet lost a single match in the $600,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball A1 Grand Slam and has earned themselves a total of five wins so far. Next in line for the Americans is a match against the Czech Republic’s
Kristyna Kolcova and Marketa Slukova, whom they will be playing shortly today, August 5. The Czech duo is ranked as the fourth seed in the tournament. After defeating Brazil, today’s match should be a piece of cake for the Americans.
Klagenfurt, Austria, is playing host to the FIVB Beach Volleyball A1 Grand Slam. The American duo and the Brazilians Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta competed against each other on Thursday, 4th August. In a contest that surprised most and
shocked some, as the Americans were able to hand out a defeat to the top seeded Brazilian players. The game being played was the final match of pool play.
The game took on exciting tones as the two teams were fighting hard to keep dominance on the sand court. It took a total of three sets for the Americans to accomplish the impressive task of creating an upset in the tournament by defeating a much tougher
team than themselves.
The Americans came out strong in the first set and were able to keep control for most of the game. However, the Brazilians did not take the loss of the opening set well and battled hard for the second set. The Brazilians took the match to a decisive fifth
set which had all the sparks that a final set should have. However, the team that scrapped together a win at the end was the Americans as they surged ahead by the following final set scores: 21-14, 20-22 and 15-13. It took the American duo a total of 49 minutes
to grab the win.
The win over the Brazilian squad is the first time that the Americans have been able to defeat their rivals after the World Championship Moscow Grand Slam. The match was held on the 15th July.
