Angie Bainbridge claims Women’s 400m freestyle title in Stockholm: Day two – 2011 FINA World Cup
Australia’s veteran and Olympic gold medallist, Angie Bainbridge produced an exciting swim on day two of the 2011 FINA World Cup series, in Stockholm, Sweden, on Sunday, October 16. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 400m freestyle final.
Bainbridge began the final heat in a confident way and blew up her rivals, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom and Great Britain’s Eleanor Faulkner by hitting the finishing wall with a thrilling time of 4 minutes and 03.02 seconds to win the 400m freestyle title. Angie
Bainbridge was the gold medallist in the 4x200m freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing.
Sarah Sjostrom earned silver medal in the respective race by submitting a winning time of 4 minutes and 03.60 seconds, while Eleanor Faulkner picked bronze medal with a mark of 4 minutes and 04.13 seconds. Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Rebecka Turner came out
strongly and grabbed fourth spot by posting an impressive time of 4 minutes and 10.81 seconds.
Sweden’s Gabriella Fagundez got fifth position with a time of 4 minutes and 10.89 seconds. Fagundez was the bronze medallist in the 4x100m freestyle at the 2004 and 2010 European Championship editions, in Madrid and Budapest, respectively. In the meantime,
Columbia’s Rebecca Ekelund settled for sixth place in a time of 4 minutes and 15.24 seconds.
The seventh place went to Sweden’s Elsa Ericsson with a mark of 4 minutes and 17.04 seconds, while Vilma Ekstrom picked eighth spot in 4 minutes and 23.56 seconds.
The wonderful efforts of all swimmers stunned the arena and the top three athletes of the respective race were delivered medals and cash prizes after the session’s completion.
The 2011 FINA World Cup series is a huge occasion for all young athletes of Sweden, Russia and Australia to prepare themselves hard for their upcoming major trials of the 2012 London Olympics.
The third round of the seven stop World Series is scheduled to take place in Moscow, Russia, from October 18-19. The seven stop World Series has created a lot of hype in the swimming circle around the world.
