Angola's women national handball team in turmoil at the 2011 Handball Championships – Handball News
The 2011 World Women's Handball Championship is currently underway in Brazil. The tournament started from December 2, 2011 and would end on December 18, 2011. The Angolan national senior women’s handball team entered into the competition
after qualifying for the tournament as favourites. In the ongoing Handball Championships in Brazil, the Angolan team has not been as strong as expected. Placed in the Group A of the competition, they have faced tough competition from their rival teams including
China, Iceland, Montenegro and Norway.
Angolan players competed in the first match of the tournament against China on December 3, 2011. The Chinese women’s team was performing well but the Angolans defeated them 30-29. On December 4, 2011, the Angolan team met Iceland.
The women’s handball team from Iceland, the debutantes of the handball championship, looked in good form but they could not contain the Angolan team.
The Icelanders faced their first defeat of the tournament by the hands of the Angolan team. The Icelanders gave a good effort but Angolan team won the math 28-24. On December 6, 2011, Montenegro women’s national handball team faced
Angola. This time, the Angolan women players were on the back foot throughout the match. Angolan team were undefeated in the tournament until they met Montenegro, which won the match 28-26.
As the tournament progressed, the Angolan team’s competition grew as the Angolans could not get a steady stance in the tournament. They were considered to lead the Group A standings but with an unimpressive performance, it soon
felt that they would not even end the group stage of the competition as the second top team of their group. On December 7, 2011, it was the Norwegian women’s handball team which created hindrances for the Angolan team.
The Angolans were looking to bounce back into the tournament in the third round match. Norway’s handball team, on the other hand, was leading the points table and wanted to retain this status. For the Angolans, the match against
Norway was of importance but they were unable to capitalize once again. Norway beat Angola 26-20 in a fast paced match as Angola had no room to reply back with goals. Angola would be facing Germany’s women’s national handball team on December 9, 2011. They
would certainly be looking for a win to keep alive in the tournament.
