Angry Birds, FIFA 11 and SOCOM – Categories of gamers by games – Part 1
The gaming world is a complex one, with more layers than an artichoke and more going on at one time than the digestive system of a person suffering from diarrhea.
We can get away with analogies like that because in the gaming world anything goes, even the slightly disguising, though for humour like that you have to blame Duke Nukem and its influence on us during our younger days.
Like everything in this world, there are different types of gamers which fall under different categories. Yet, instead of giving the reader a lengthy list of multiple choice questions to determine which category he, or she falls under, we will instead list
the categories and the games associated with that category and the reader will realise which category he belongs to.
Two-Button Gamers
As the name suggests, players who fall under this category have a difficult time with games which require pressing more than two buttons at the same time.
While not exactly lacking in skill, the gamers here lack real commitment to gamers and are generally the demographic that plays game just to kill time, like on the subway or at a family dinner with one’s in-laws. You know who you are.
Games such as Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump define this category. By now, the gamers who play the aforementioned games will probably be furious claiming that the games require great skill to master, but the fact of the matter is that there is
a word for playing with/by yourself, and it is not a pleasant one.
Other games that fall under this category are Mario, Crash Bandicoot (which seems to have died out sadly), Little Big Planet and ModNation Racers.
While Mario was around when there were only two buttons to press and the Nintendo Wii versions have more in terms of depth when it comes to buttons to press, it will always be remembered as a jump over obstacle game.
Even the more recent iterations, of the Italian plumber with an overgrown moustache, fail to add any true level of depth of the series. Yes, there are different game modes and Mario Kart is perhaps one of the most enjoyable experiences in the gaming world,
but even still, it is just a simple even-a-monkey-can-play kind of game.
Players who play Little Big Planet on the other hand, may find it a harsh categorization and our sympathies go out to them but the fact is that the level that the only two buttons gamers will press in the game are either jump or grab/slap.
As entertaining as the latter is, it still is not enough to warrant a hardcore gamer title, though players that put in the hours to create levels and game modes and share them with the world can be given the accolades of gaming heroes, it is more in the
‘developer’ rather than the gamer sense.
Those who find themselves under this category may think that we here at Bettor.com are being harsh with them and branding them as simpletons and outsiders to the gaming community, but that is not the case.
The two-button gamers of today are the hardcore gamers of tomorrow and are like our little brothers and sisters.
