Angry Birds, FIFA 11 and SOCOM – Categories of gamers by games – Part 2
Discrimination exists in every corner of the world and in every walk of life. Be it based on which country one is from, which city they belong too, which football team they support, whether they fold the toilet paper or crumple it, all contribute to how
one is categorised by society.
In the gaming world however, things are much simpler. Apart from the usual Noob category, which has died down over the past few years, gamers have been looking for ways to categorise themselves. They have tried associating themselves with game titles such
as COD boys (Call of Duty), or BFFs (Battlefield Friends Forever) or even Sacks (Sack Boys and girls from the Little Big Planet series) and so on.
*note: some of the terminologies used may not be very common or mainstream, but then again it is only when things become mainstream that they lose their ability to be cool and we here at Bettor.com do not like being uncool.
Now that the reader has some idea about the general discrimination in the gaming world and can see how there is no proper framework for it, we would like to continue our categorisation of the gaming public. We started off with the initial introduction to
the gaming category, which we have termed as Two Button gamers, though with some of the games which fall under that category, it is more credit than they deserve.
The Pretenders and the Wannabes
We shall begin this category by summing it up with this quote, ‘Just because you can press more than two buttons does not mean you are a gaming God, no matter how hard you put the difficulty.’
Now that the reader has a general idea of where this is going, it is time to elaborate and explain why the term ‘pretenders’ and ‘wannabes’ is used, instead of some nicer euphemism.
The games which players, who fall under this category, play are those which are easy enough to pick up and play, but require a certain level of awareness and skill to master.
Let us explain. Take the example of Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2, the most played first person shooter games on the face of the planet. The controls are simple enough, aim, shoot, kill, reload and repeat, yet the true masters of the game know
that there is so much more to it than that.
Take another example of Killzone 3 or Battlefield 3, where accomplishing objectives requires both tactics and teamwork. The best players here know how to go about the game but more often that not the team is filled with players who run around thinking they
are one-man armies, just because they can press more than two buttons.
It is those players who have made the leap from two button games and think that they are now the most skilled assassins in the world.
Bettor.com has a lot more to say about this category of gamers and readers can find out exactly what that is in the next part of this article:
