Angulo offers his version of deportation rumour
Junior middleweight HBO sensation Alfredo Angulo has snapped back at reports that he will be deported from the United States for lacking citizenship credentials.
The Boxing Examiner’s Michael Marley, among others, speculated Angulo would be deported from the United States for entering illegally from Mexico. Angulo, who caught wind of the news recently, said the rumours are gross exaggerations and that someone is
unjustly attacking him.
"I don't have the faintest idea why they are doing this,” he said. “I think the comments were made by Top Rank, but I'm not sure. If I had a problem, I wouldn't be here."
Angulo revealed he has a P-1 visa that offers temporary residency. He said it expired some months ago and that efforts are being made to renew the visa before the issue becomes more problematic.
"I have to renew it by a certain time and in fact I'm trying to renew it right now, but I pay my taxes, I'm fine with the government (United States) and I don't expect a problem [with approval being issued for the visa renewal]," Angulo confirmed.
The contender, who recently turned down a career-payday fight with Sergio Martinez, has no anxieties about the visa issue, but is admittedly a bit worried about future relations with HBO. The broadcasting company, who televised three of Angulo's last four
fights, sent a letter to Angulo's promoter Gary Shaw saying they will not broadcast him until he can prove legal residency.
Angulo speculated he was being punished for turning down the HBO-sponsored WBC middleweight title bout with Martinez. He was offered $750,000 for the fight, and asked for $1-million, which was promptly rejected.
"I do not know what happened, perhaps because I turned down the fight against Sergio Martinez and perhaps in doing so [my decision] interfered in what they were planning [HBO and the promoters].”
