Ani Mijacika overcomes Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first qualifier – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 235, Ani Mijacika of Croatia, survived a scare in the first set to beat her lowly ranked opponent, Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the qualifying draw at the Barcelona Ladies Open
on Saturday.
Mijacika and Tormo broke each other in the opening two games of the match, levelling the score at 1-1 in the first set. The Croatian grabbed a 4-2 lead, as she struck in the sixth game and capitalised on it to win 6-3.
The 24-year-old was erratic on the second serve, as she committed a couple of double faults and lost seven of the 13 points but did well on the first ones, winning 15 of the 27 points on them.
Mijacika got complete control of the match, as she hit a couple of blows in the first three games of the second set, building a 3-0 lead. However, Tormo made a remarkable comeback, as she broke the serve of her opponent three times,
claiming six games in a row to seal it 6-3.
The Spaniard gave a brilliant first serve performance, as she delivered 78 percent of them and converted 12 of the 21 into points. Tormo saved two of the four break points she faced and converted three of the six she received in
the second set.
The 15-year-old could not capitalise on the winning momentum, as she ran out of steam in the decider, getting broken twice in the first four games to trail 0-4. Tormo made some effort, as she won Mijacika’s serve in the fifth but
lost her own once again to do down 1-5. Mijacika used her experience and never allowed the Spaniard to come back, winning it 6-1.
The Croatian pocketed most of the points on the first serve and second returns, claiming 10 of the 14 and five of the six points on them respectively.
The Croatian needed two hours and nine minutes to come out victorious from the match.
Mijacika will face Ukrainian, Yuliya Beygelzimer, in the second qualifier. Beygeizimer upset second seed, Karin Knapp of Italy, in the previous match.
