Anibal Borrajo and Megan Guarnier win second stage of Joe Martin race – Cycling news
Megan Guarnier of the Tibco-To the Top team won the bunch sprint of the second stage of the Joe Martin Stage race.
Guarnier took a total of 2 hours, 45 minutes and 22 seconds to cover the distance of 110 kilometres.
Lex Albrecht of the Juvederm-Specialized team was in second place while 2010 winner Modesta Vzeniauskaite of the Colavita team finished third behind Albrecht.
The five riders of the Tibco-To the Top team performed well in the stage and Guarnier was really proud of them.
Tibco-To the Top DS Lisa Hunt said, “It was a little hectic at the finish but the girls executed their lead-out perfectly. We were patient and then drove it going into the final turn. Megan passed Modesta in the sprint.”
Megan started the stage in third place 9.95 seconds ahead of the other riders but with the help of her team, she won the race.
After winning the stage, Guarnier won ten seconds as time bonus and passed the previous race leader Janel Holcomb of the Colavita team. She suffered a mishap as she broke her chain in the final three kilometres and rolled to the finish line 0.05 seconds
behind Megan.
Canadian rider Lex Albrecht of the Juvederm-Specialized team was in third place with a difference of 9 seconds.
In the men’s category, Anibal Borrajo of the Colavita team won the second stage of Joe Martin race on Friday in Fayetteville. Anibal Borrajo covered the distance of 110 kilometres in 4 hours, 12 minutes and 50 seconds.
Roman van Uden of the Pure Black Racing team was the runner-up, while overall race leader Francisco Mancebo was in third place.
RealCyclist.com DS Gord Fraser said, “The sprint was complicated for us because we were torn between putting everything on Cole House for the stage sprint or protecting Paco’s overall lead.”
In the middle of the third stage the group of two riders, Jay Thompson and Guido Palma gained roughly three minutes in the field.
In the top of the climb, a group of four riders including Andy Jacques-Maynes of the Bissell team along with two riders from the Chipotle Development team and one rider from the Pure Black Racing team made new breaks.
Despite facing a challenge in the last kilometres of the race, Anibal Borrajo took a lead ahead of the other riders.
Francisco Mancebo took a lead in the overall classification with a timing of 4 hours, 20 minutes and 46 seconds. Benjamin Jacques was in second place 7 seconds behind Mancebo.
The next stage will start on Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Fayetteville and all the riders will cover the distance of 81 kilometres for victory.
