Anibal Sanchez seeking seven year $100 million contract – MLB Update
Which team is going to pay $15 million per year to former Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez?
The $90 million six year deal tag seems to be small considering Sanchez played a big part in Tigers’ American League Central Division winning campaign in 2012. He continued his heroic form in the post-season, helping his side reach the World Series, as reported
by Fox Sports and CBS Sports.
According to a source, Sanchez has also asked another team for a seven year $100 million contract. It is unclear exactly what team he is placing that price on. A number of Major League Baseball teams have shown interest in signing Sanchez after the post-season
ended.
Of course, his former club, Tigers wanted to re-sign him for the next season but they may not be able to offer him a contract in that range. Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers are the other teams
looking to acquire Sanchez’s services for the next season.
Only three Tigers made more than $15 million per year in 2012. Prince Fielder, who signed on for $214 million nine year contract, made $23 million last year. Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander made $21 million and $20.1 million respectively.
"Do I think it helps that we had Sanchez (this year)? My answer would be yes," general manager Dave Dombrowski said at the annual state of the Tigers address. "But I'm also practical enough to know that in other ways, no, because when you get to this point,
probably offers being equal, it helps you.”
Sanchez asking price of $15 million is considerably higher than what other starting pitchers made in 2012. Max Scherzer and Doug Fister, who also posted some impressive number last year, made $3.74 million and $507K respectively.
Obviously, the Tigers will have to think hard before paying a steep price to keep Sanchez in their pitching rotation. Sanchez registered an incredible 1.77 ERA with 18 strike-outs in three post-season games. He also displayed some top quality throwing skills
for the Tigers in September, posting an excellent 2.43 ERA. Sanchez and Omar Infante were acquired by Detroit in a trade in July 2012.
