Anibal Sanchez shines as Detroit Tigers hammer Cleveland Indians 10-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers hammered the Cleveland Indians 10-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Friday, August 3 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers’ hitting line-up displayed some top quality skills to put Cleveland under immense pressure. Alex Avila made the most of available opportunities early on as he doubled to left in the second inning and Brennan Boesch scored to put Detroit on the board.
"It's really disappointing to let my team down. The biggest thing is that I wanted to set a tone and help us turn this around, and that didn't happen," Indians’ pitcher Justin Masterson said.
Home Run Derby star Prince Fielder continued to impress the critics as he got a double. Austin Jackson and rookie Quintin Berry scored to make the score 3-1 in Tigers’ favour.
Berry had another excellent outing with the bat. His double in the fourth extended the lead to 4-1.
"I think we're just getting good pitches and not missing them -- that seems to be what happens," Fielder said. "See it, hit it, pretty much. That's what is easiest for me."
"That guy is incredible. I saw this guy when he was in Milwaukee," Sanchez said of Prince Fielder. "I know what he's got, so it's really good being on the same team."
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera had an RBI single to left centre in the fourth and Fielder connected for a two run home-run to right to take the lead beyond Indians’ reach. Andy Dirks and Avila drove in runs as the Tigers ended the game on an extremely positive
note.
Anibal Sanchez had a great time on the mound as he picked up his first win of the season. Tigers’ starting pitcher gave up just two runs with five strike-outs in six effective innings to lower his ERA to 4.50.
Relief pitcher Darin Downs pitched two scoreless innings and closer Brayan Villarreal pitched the perfect ninth as the Tigers held on to their lead with ease to complete a comprehensive victory.
The Tigers will be very happy with their performance as they managed to build up some confidence and get their offence to fire at just the right time to take a decisive victory over the Indians.
