Anibal Sanchez shines as Florida Marlins defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins’ starting pitcher, Anibal Sanchez had an outstanding day with the ball as he threw nine innings without giving any run with an ERA of 3.64 in the Marlins’ 3-0 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on September 10.
First two innings remained without runs as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect line. Ben Petersen walked and stole second base during the first inning but John Buck, Omar Infante and Emilio Bonifacio each flied out towards left-field without adding any
run for the Marlins. Similarly, at the bottom of second inning, Neil Walker doubled to left-field while Pedro Alvarez and Jeff Locke both struck-out swinging without contributing runs.
In the third inning, Marlins’ batters smashed three runs to take a convincing 3-0 lead. Bonifacio and Petersen both scored two collective runs for the Marlins when Buck hit a single-run drive towards right-centre and Gaby Sanchez moved to third base. The
third run was taken by Gaby Sanchez when Donnie Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field. Later on, Buck tagged out to second base to end the third inning.
The remaining six innings went score-less as the batters failed to play scoring shots and ground out on curveballs. At the bottom of the sixth inning, Chase D’Arnaud popped out, Andrew McCutchen struck-out and Derrek Lee ground out without giving some initial
runs to the Pirates.
Anibal Sanchez gave up just one hit and three walks on his 119 pitches. He struck-out 11 batters throughout the game. Speaking to reporters, Sanchez said, “I wanted to throw the ball away because he doesn't usually hit the ball the other way on the line.
I made the right pitch. He just hit it. There's nothing you can do.”
Buck said, “He was getting ahead of guys with his fastball and slider, and his secondary pitchers were there whether he was ahead or behind in the count.”
Pirates missed some valuable runs and were unable to break their silence in the eighth inning when Josh Harrison hit for Michael McKenry and then ground out to short-stop position without scoring even a single run. Garrett Jones and Alex Presley both flied
out towards right-field at the bottom of eighth inning.
As a result, Marlins confirmed a 2-0 lead in the three-game series against the Pirates at Pittsburgh.
