Anibal Sanchez stars in Detroit Tigers’ stunning 3-0 win over New York Yankees – MLB Update
As New York Yankees are batting without their captain Derek Jeter, Detroit Tigers are certainly the favourites to win the American League Championship Series.
After securing a narrow 6-4 win in the opener, the Tigers produced another magical performance in Game 2 of ALCS in Yankee Stadium, New York to dent Yankees’ confidence levels.
Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez had one of the best outings of his Major League Baseball career as he struck-out seven Yankees’ batters in seven solid innings. Allowing just three against the powerful Yankees’ batting line-up, Sanchez showed the comfort
level he is feeling right now.
After back-to-back rough outings from relief pitcher Jose Valverde, Tigers had a close by committee situation ready for the Game 2 but relief pitcher Phil Coke tossed up two perfect inning to help Tigers seal a superb shut-out victory.
It is clear now why the Tigers felt they could do something special in October if they could only get there. Although they have some of the best hitters in their batting line-up, they are dictating the terms with their dominant starting pitching.
"The thing is, we knew with our rotation, if we're able to get in, we knew we could do some damage," catcher Alex Avila said. "We have guys that can strike guys out, which is big in the playoffs."
"I think it kind of started the last month of the season, knowing that we had to catch the White Sox," Avila continued. "Each one of our guys went out there and kind of one-upped the other, really pitched well the last month of the season to get into the
playoffs, but also continued doing that into the playoffs."
After Doug Fister’s inspiring performance in Game 1, Anibal Sanchez seven shut-out innings on Saturday night shows they are forcing their dominance in the series.
With their win, the Tigers also became only the 23rd team in League Championship Series history to take 2-0 series lead in best of seven match-up. With ace Justin Verlander awaiting the Yankees on Tuesday at Comerica Park, it will be very difficult
for the Yankees to find a way back into the series.
