Anibal Sanchez’s eleven strikeouts edge Marlins past Nationals in a sweep-avoiding game: MLB Update
The Florida Marlins’ starter, Anibal Sanchez, had a remarkable day with the bat, as the pitcher and took out the Washington Nationals’ eleven batters in the Club’s 8-0 sweep-avoiding victory at the Sun Life Stadium, on Sunday, May 8.
Sanchez held the Nationals to no-hit until his 101st pitch, when Laynce Nix opened the account for the Nationals with a line-single to right-field of the diamond. Besides this, Sanchez gave another hit in the same inning, when Michael Morse drove in a base-stealing-single.
Anibal did not give any walk or earned run in his seven innings and struck-out career's high eleven batters in front of a packed crowd which also included his mother.
Sanchez said, "She made me breakfast this morning, so that's why I threw a game like that." Sanchez said. However, she should not he be the one doing the cooking on Mother's Day? "I'm supposed to," he said with a smile, "but I'm the baby."
The Mariners’ manager, Edwin Rodriguez, was surprised to see such devastating performance from a top hurler, who now has 43 strikeouts in 2011 season.
Rodriguez said, "In the sixth inning I didn't know there was a no-hitter going. It took me by surprise. My pitching coach and bench coach let me know. They thought I was kidding, but I did not know. It was hot out there."
While Sanchez held the Nationals' batters, on the other hand, the Mariners’ batting line up took full advantage of the loose pitches from the Nationals’ starter, Liven Hernandez. Gregg Dobbs led off the game in second inning hitting a runs-batted-in (RBI)
single. In fourth, Dobbs added another RBI single to take his Club to 2-0.
Hanley Ramirez took the lead to 3-0 adding a line drive single in fifth, and then Gaby Sanchez launched a 407-feet long three-run homer to cement the Club’s strong hold over the opposition. The Mariners took the game to their hand completely in seventh,
when Mike Stanton scored drove to shortstop for another RBI single.
The Nationals have gone under such a huge pressure that the reliever, Henry Rodriguez started tossing wild pitches. On one of these wild pitches, Gaby Sanchez and Bryan Peterson scored in eighth inning.
Hernandez pitched five innings, gave six run on eight hits, two walks and made two strikeouts to loss in his fourth game of season. The reliever Brian Broderick and closer Rodriguez gave one run each in their one-inning spells. However, reliever Todd Coffey
remained scoreless in one inning and took out one batter.
Besides Sanchez, the Marlins’ reliever, Ryan Webb, and closer, Burke Badenhop, pitched perfect innings and did not give any run while took out one batter each.
