Anibal Sanchez’s five year $80 million deal, a significant risk – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Detroit Tigers took a significant risk when they sign on free agent starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez for a five year $80 million deal. However, it the move pays off, the Tigers could end their 28 years World Series drought.
Since 1984, the Tigers have not won the World Series title. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, they were considered as the underdogs in the American League but things have changed dramatically over the last couple of season with new owner Mike Ilitch’s willingness
to spend to reclaim the past glory.
A lot of credit should be given to the Manager Jim Leyland who has led the Tigers to World Series finals twice in last seven years. However, on both occasion, Leyland and his men were unable to cross the finale hurdle.
"Thank you, Mr. Ilitch, to let it happen," Sanchez said after signing on a contract that would keep him in Detroit until 2018.
"I know the players, the front office; we almost get the ring," he said, referring to the four-game tumble to the Giants in the World Series. "Now I have a pretty good team. We'll (bring) the ring to the city."
"It's a risk," Dombrowski said as he, Sanchez. "Pitching is a risky business. That's just the way it is.
"From a club perspective, we would prefer a shorter window. There are things that can happen."
The Tigers won the American League Central Division title in 2011 and they improved the statistics by claiming the American League Champion Series against the New York Yankees in 2012. Somewhere down the road, the biggest prize of baseball is waiting for
them and the Tigers re-signed Anibal Sanchez on a lucrative contract to find that prize.
Of course, signing Sanchez is a gamble because if he fails, the Tigers will lose their valuable money. However, if the 28 year old right hander can live up to the expectations in 2013, Tigers’ fans can expect their wait to end sooner rather than later. It
will be interesting to see if the investment can bring success for the Tigers in near future.
