Anibal Sanchez’s pitching helps Florida Marlins defeat New York Mets 5-0 – MLB Update
Anibal Sanchez, put in a brilliant pitching performance as the Florida Marlins defeated the New York Mets 5-0 at Roger Dean Stadium in Florida on March 20.
Sanchez missed the start due to an injured right leg and pitched the ball for the first time since last 10 days. He permitted five hits and acquired some extra help from his cover fielders in the second inning just before the double of Brad Emaus.
Sanchez has not thrown the ball against the Mets after the fifth inning. He also struggled with his low speed throws early in the innings but came-back strongly in the later innings. Sanchez suffered a leg problem but performed well when required, like first
base defence.
The Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez stated that Sanchez wished to play an additional inning but it was not in favour of him. Rodriguez further added that their pitching sets the flow in a game.
The Marlins’ catcher John Buck caught out the Mets’ catcher Ronny Paulino at second base in the fifth inning. The Marlins made five runs to Mike O'Connor and Bobby Parnell in the seventh inning.
The Marlins’ bull-pen pitching session stayed hitless up to four innings, then hitting out five batters and permitting a single walk. Emilio Bonifacio, Ozzie Martinez and Dewayne Wise had successive run-posting singles before Donnie Murphy forced two runs
including a double.
The Mets’ pitcher Chris Young threw six no-score innings and permitted four singles with three hit outs. During the spring season, Young permitted just three runs in 20 innings. Young struck-out the two runners in the first and second inning with no score.
Young expressed his feelings and said, "The main thing is physically I feel real good. I felt like my fastball command is the best it's been today. I was very, very happy with it. It kind of carried over from the last couple of innings against Washington
in my last start."
Young has fixed his position in the Mets' regulation after inking a free agent agreement in January, 2011. He had also played as a starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres during 2010 but struggled with a right shoulder injury.
Speaking to reporters, the Mets’ manager Terry Collins said, “He just continues to throw the ball exactly how we want him to. The command of his stuff is getting better and better. I've talked to guys that have faced him and they said you just can't pick
the ball up until late.”
The Marlins and the Mets will be looking to make improvements to their respective line-ups, as the regular season is about to start.
