Former India captain Anil Kumble has been appointed as the Chief Mentor of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team after he pulled out of the players’ auction for the fourth edition of Indian Premier League.
In a statement published on the official website of the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore it was revealed that the former captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore "will work closely with team owner Vijay Mallya" and other members of
the RCB management including the team coach Ray Jennings.
Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman of the UB Group and owner of the franchise, praised Kumble’s efforts, both on-field and off-field, saying that his leadership argued well for RCB in its last two seasons of both IPL as well as the Champions League.
Mallya was hopeful that the inclusion of Kumble in the leadership panel of Royal Challengers Bangalore will take the side to new horizons.
“I sincerely believe Anil’s presence in the RCB Leadership Team will provide a fresh dimension and perspective to our IPL Strategy in the medium and long term,” said the RCB owner.
The 40-year-old leg-break bowler of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 turned around the fortunes of the RCB with his match-winning performances in the last two seasons. He was the captain of the side in the last two IPL editions and led the side to final in IPL 2 and
finished third in the last season. It was under his leadership, the Royal Challengers Bangalore qualified twice for the Champion League T20 tournament.
In the three IPL editions Kumble played for RCB, he picked up 45 wickets. This time he was placed at a reserve price of US $4000, 000 but he decided to withdraw his name from the auction citing business commitments as well as his association
with the game in various capacities.
The RCB website also quoted the legendary Indian leg-spinner as saying that he was all set to join the franchise in his new off-field role.
“I am excited to take on the mentoring role for Royal Challengers,” said Kumble. “At the same time, the task involves huge responsibility to better the benchmarks that Royal Challengers have already created in the last two seasons.”
