Animal Collectors like ME!

So after a few months of searching for the next perfect horse, we've found him! I'm done having my own two legged babies for now, but I'm ready for some 4 legged ones! While perusing horse classifieds, horse magazines, and google search engines a man came up to the Hay Lot(my hubby and I own the local hay lot and sell alfalfa and grass hay) and purchased a few bales. A few days earlier I stopped at a ranch after driving past a little buckskin colt for months and decided to see what they were asking for him. He was a driftwood bred colt, but was already sold. I got in my truck feeling defeated. Then this man showed up, when I asked what he was feeding out to, he told me that he had driftwood bred mares, stallions, and babies on the ground. And said there was lots of color. He asked if my hubby and kids and I would like to come out to his ranch and look at his horses, and since I never pass up a chance to look, we went that afternoon. We spent about 3 hours looking over his 150 head of horses. And the hubby and I came across this mare with a big ole buckskin colt at her side.

A week later I returned to look at a few of the horses I had noticed and written down to take a second look. He had already weaned the colts and fillys and had them in a pin. I saw the buckskin colt again, and I knew I was hooked. He's a big boned colt with lots of eye appeal, great conformation, and bloodlines to boot. The perfect colt to get me back into showing since I went of my hiatus since my first daughter. Here's a picture of him at only 2 months old. He's of course started getting his black legs and his mane and tail are darker too.

We're going tomorrow to pay for him.

And to make this a question. How did you meet your horse(s)? Include pictures as I LOVE looking.

  2. Congrats - he's adorable! Sometimes, you just know!

My story... I'm a reporter for a series of community newspapers. I did a story on an area equine rescue; when I went to do the interview, I got a tour of the place and an introduction to the horses there. One took a definite liking to me... followed me around like a puppy, wouldn't let anyone else near, sulked and pouted when I left.

I stayed in touch with the rescue, and needless to say, I got adopted. I had NO intentions of getting a horse, but I had to give him a home and a person to call his own. 6 months later, I don't know what I ever did without him!

That's him and his rescue person, an absolute sweetheart of a woman.

  3. I got my Arab mare when I was ten. I had been begging my parents for riding lessons and finally they agreed. We went to a ladys house who had a beautiful gray mare that I was going to ride. Unfortunately it was raining so I didn't get to ride  then but I was still excited. That weekend we went to my Aunts house who had cows and my Dad told us that one of the cows had a calf. We raced to the pasture and I was shocked to see that same beautiful gray Arab mare grazing there. She has been my best friend for the past 10 years and has done everything from foxhunting and dressage, to western riding and parades.

I got my next horse, a bay TB gelding, 3 yrs. ago. He was starved and had a bad attitude from being locked in his stall for weeks on end. After a battle with his owner, we finally got him. Despite being a couple hundred lbs. underweight, having no muscle, and having abcesses from a nail going all the way through his hoof, he was still out of control. After some groceries and a serious attitude adjustment he is now my wonderful combined training horse and is almost ready to event.

  4. That's a nice looking buckskins colt. I bought my two favorite horses at a horse sale in my state. I went to the sale to buy a paint mare and saw him. With his big white face he looked lonesome. He was a weanling and I bought him. I like him because he was a tough horse to train and I learned a lot working with him. We have a good bond now. He is a Smart Little Lena grandson, but I didn't know that when I bid on him. Here is his picture:

About 2 years later I went to the same sale barn. I didn't go there to buy a horse that day, but when I saw her, I had to bid. She was too good to pass up. She was also a weanling. She is my favorite mare. She follows me like a puppy dog and I love her. She is a Strait From Texas granddaughter.
