Animal Kingdom’s scans show his clear for training
The 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom has been plagued with injuries ever since he ran the 2011 Belmont Stakes, where he was found at the receiving end of a chain of collisions and consequently suffered a hind leg fracture – which ruled him out of races for the rest of the season.
The 4-year-old Leroidesanimaux colt, had a s***w inserted after his fracture, and it he was sidelined, but the Graham Motion trained colt was set to make his huge comeback in the Group 1, $10 million Dubai World Cup at the Meydan in March this year, but he was ruled out once again prior to the race.
Though, he returned to the races with a solid allowance/optional claimer win on turf at Gulfstream Park on 18 February, 2012, under his regular rider John Velazquez.
Going over a distance of 1 1/16 miles, Animal Kingdom defeated Monument Hill and Bell By The Ridge in the stretch, who finished second and third respectively, while Animal Kingdom topped the grass race in 1 minute and 42.72 seconds.
It was his prep race for the 31 March, 2012 event in Dubai.
Out of Acatenango mare Dalicia, Animal Kingdom though couldn’t do more after his 10 March workout session where he came out of the track with the hind stress that ruled him out of the Dubai World Cup.
Now, the Kentucky bred colt by Team Valor, Animal Kingdom underwent a bone scan, when he was vanned from Fair Hill Training Center to New Bolton Center, where the scan showed that there were no signs of injury left and he is clear to go under the tack for trainer Graham Motion.
Animal Kingdom will begin light training back at Fair Hill, where his exercise will majorly comprise of jogging, and the Kentucky Derby winning colt will try his second attempt to the races later this year.
"It’s really encouraging," Motion said. We’re right on schedule for what they said."
Animal Kingdom after winning the Kentucky Derby finished a whisker adrift of Shackleford in the Preakness Stakes, and despite of his injury, Animal Kingdom finished 6th in the Belmont Stakes.
