Question:

Animal Testing and Biomedical Engineering Technology Research?

I am currently under hard decision on my future studies in college and a possible future in scientific research.

Because I am a person opposed to ANIMAL TESTING and have very strong feelings about the matter. If I take a career in Biomedical Engineering, or any other research-like path, are there ways where I will be able to avoid and have alternatives to animal testing; or is it inevitable that a career which merges technology and health, prosthetics, and artificial organs will eventually run me into a lab full of tortured animals.

Please help, I really need a serious answer from the right knowledgeable people.

Thank you so much in advance.

  1. as a current biomedical engineering student too, the field is huge and growing everyday, you can go into fields of stem cell research, to using cells to grow human organs, to building fake limbs, those normally shouldnt run you into any problems with animal testing, i dont see how they would correlate to it. So if you specify your major to something like those, you should be fine.

  2. I can't even stand to read about this. Some humans are HORRIBLE and EVIL. And it's not like they don't know what they're doing.

  3. depends what you want to research, one very well known cosmetics company has announced that it has managed to grow artificial skin so that animal testing will not be necessary with regard to cosmetics ,so I would think that there would be many Bio-engineering opportunities in the future that bypass animal testing

  4. If you are involved in any aspect of human health you are party to animal testing.  Sorry, but unless you specifically concentrate in microbiology you have no guarantee that you won't come in contact with some sort of animal testing.

If you are strongly opposed to taking part in animal testing then you are going to need to choose a different career path.  If you are strongly opposed to supporting companies or products that test on animals you should stop wearing any sort of cosmetic and cease taking any sort of medicine.

  5. As of now, the best place to get artificial organs is from growing them within animals and harvesting them.  It is possible that future technological advances can lead us to non-animal experiments and procedures, however that is not yet around.

Until we can get human volunteers, there looks to be animals around for a long time.

If you can't reconcile your dislike of animal testing, I would recommend a different career path.

  6. Unfortunately, almost anything to do with science or in some degree math..has certain aspects of animal testing (consider college biology and all the dissection you have to do)..

I'm against it too..but You can always find a career without trading in your morals.

  7. Well, by studying Biomedical Engineering you can enter into fields such as stem cell research, genetics - gene sequencing, dna/ cell cloning, stuff like that....In this you'll be working with humans and animals at a molecular level....
