Animal abuse at zoos?

Question

im doing a report on zoos.

i need to know the various forms of animal abuse at zoos.

and should zoos be illegal?

i think they should be changed into benefit events to help raise money for endangered species. what do you think of this idea?

Zoos are among the least abusive facilities for exotic animals. For one thing, they're public places, exposed to the media and hundreds of people regularly.

Capturing animals from the wild for display is harmful on some counts, helpful on others. Take this example: the golden lion tamarin (a Brazilian monkey) was critically endangered five years ago. It was expected to go extinct. However, this species was bred in captivity--in zoos. These captives were taught the necessary skills for survival in the wild and released. The released tamarins were monitored for months afterward to ensure that they were properly adjusting. Because of this program, the golden lion tamarin has sprung from a worldwide population of less than eight hundred to nearly two thousand. The species is now merely endangered. This would not have been possible without zoos. Animals in zoos are treated humanely, and often are the sole reason that a species exists at all.

If you want to report on animal abuse, there are hundreds of examples. Animal sanctuaries are far more questionable than zoos. No one sees what goes on in a sanctuary on a regular basis. Take the case of Primary Primates Institute, a sanctuary for monkeys. One of the largest primate sanctuaries in America, it was recently uncovered to be an atrocity. Monkeys there were starved, neglected and kept in windowless rooms without ever going outside. The founder used donations to the organization to build himself a house and buy a car, while the animals received little benefit. Regardless, this facility still operates. While I certainly don't condone PETA's main standings, it was responsible for exposing PPI.

What about the exotic pet trade? People abuse exotic animals all over the world--often without knowing. Animals such as the cotton-top tamarin need precise temperature and vitamin supplements to survive, which many private owners don't know. When a cute baby monkey reaches adulthood, it becomes what it truly is: a wild animal. Unexperienced owners have punished their monkeys for natural behavior by chaining, confining, beating, electrically shocking and even subjecting the animal to surgical teeth removal. There's inhumanity for you.

There are so many examples of animal mistreatment that need voice. Why berate zoos, the establishments regulated by government, peppered with experts and forever in the public eye, when animals die cruel and unusual deaths daily in sanctuaries and private homes? The abuse is happening in the latter, not at zoos. Put your weight behind a real issue: write about these, not zoos.

Groups like PETA only show you the worst things about keeping animals then makes it look like everybody does it that way. There are over 10,000 big cats in captivity in the U.S. Out of that only one person a year is killed by a big cat. You are more likely to die from lightning or from falling out of bed. More people get killed by run away race cars but I don't see anyone trying to ban NASCAR.

Most zoos do a lot of good. They provide a good life to their animals, they educate the public, they do research and conservation projects around the world, and zoos DO occasionaly release animals back into the wild. PETA tends to leave those detailes out when they tell you about zoos.

PETA and the HSUS are not what they claim to be. They believe in total animal liberation which means that they think that there should be no circuses, zoos (even AZA), laboratories (even medical), farms, service dogs, police dogs, and PETS of any kind. They believe that animals are better off DEAD then living with even the best pet owner.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) collected millions of dollars from individuals to save the animals during Katrina. They did not use the money to do that though. They are currently under investigation for it. What most people do not realize about HSUS is that they are not your local animal shelter. None of the money that they raise goes to the local animal shelter. It has also been provened that PETA uses its money to kill animals and support terrorist groups like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) who has a tendency to blow up buildings to get their point across.

I am not saying that you shouldn't neuter/spay your pet, I am just saying that the choose should be up to the owner and not animal rights extremists. Groups like these are mislabeling breeders and passing mandatory spay/neutered laws as part of their total animal liberation plan.

Dude.... No.... They don't really abuse animals except stun them when they try to kill eachother or if they try to kill a human.

well some zoos do help alot with the endangered species like the Ohio Zoo and Aquarium :). there we do raise money for them and treat the animals very well and we don't take them out of there normal environment, we have like families of animals. but i do think some zoos should not be able to hold animals b/c of there abuse. they usually are like that if they have a lack of funding. but it just depends on the zoo i guess

If you are looking for places that abuse animals for your report  you should look up knowas arc i am not sure but i head they were shut donw for poor conditions they were keeping there animals in like i said i dont know for sure but that is what i heard and they are defintly shut down

yes there is absolutely not reason for them

sure lets capture animals form their environment

put them in an increadablt small cage

make humans pay to see them depressed

eating popcorn or watever people throw at them

or tap on glass or yell and provoke them,

look wat happened to the last kid that yelled at the tiger exhibit at the san diego zoo he got killed when the tiger jumped over the trench up the wall and killed the kids

its their fault they provked it and were found with slingshots

these animals are wild and deserve to be  there

Zoo's are terrible.  They capture and lock up animals.

Just take Polar Bears.  They develop all sorts of mental problems being locked up in small areas.  They end up acing back and forth..back and forth....

Zoo's should be outlawed.  They are cruel.  If you want to see a bear,  hike out into the forest.  How would you like it it some people from uter space grabbed you and put you in a zoo on Mars.
