Animal cells placed in distilled water first swell and then burst, but plant cells placed in distilled....?

  1. the cell wall in plants supply extra structural support, placed in distilled water, the plant cell would enter a turgit state, which is normal for plants, and keep them rigid.  When the plant is placed in a isotonic solution, it would become limp.


  2. Plant cells have a cell wall as well as a membrane.  Animal cells only have the membrane so water can easily pass through. The cell wall keeps the plant cell rigid so it cannot burst

  3. Animal cells have a permeable membrane and have no fixed shape. Therefore, distilled water, which has no large sized impurities (cell size) enters the animal cell and upon extreme enlargement, they burst. Plant cells, owing to having a fixed cell size and a semi-permeable membrane resist bursting.
