Question:

Animal lover to the point of ridicule?

There are mice at our vet clinic. I don't protest the use of mouse traps that instantly kill the rodent, but I draw the line at traps that kill them slowly. This morning I came to work and found a mouse. It was stuck to a glue trap. Alive. I couldn't believe it. They actually make and sell traps that operate soley to stick the animal to them and allow it to struggle, suffer, and starve until it FINALLY dies?

I was disgusted. We work at the clinic to BETTER the lives of animals, but here we are, using the most inhumane trap on mice. I brought up the issue to the boss' sister. She laughed at me. Then she told the secretary, "Chuck thinks the glue traps are inhumane!" She replied "Chuck! They're ONLY mice!"

I'm sure they wouldn't leave a stray dog stuck to something like that and wait for it to starve to death or die of exhaustion. What's the difference? They can both feel pain.

Am I *too much* of an animal lover? Is it really absurd of me to think of the suffering of a mouse?

  1. Only mice?!  What an awful way to die.

No, you're not too much of an animal lover.

You're a good person.  Thanks for speaking

    your piece.

  2. Nope, I thought I  was an animal lover but I've never thought of that (the suffering traps). But now it's on my mind. You should ask your boss's sister what she would do if it was her stuck there...or you could give me her address...hehehe...j/k. But your awsome

  3. No it's not absurd at all..... I completely agree with you. I hate seeing animals suffer in any form... and believe me they can feel pain, and fear too just as much as us.

In fact I wish there were MORE people like you. Too many people in the world today are indifferent.

  4. this incident shows the human inconsequence - either you are an 'animal lover', and if so, then you have to protect EVERY life. even a mouse. even a cockroach. even an ant.

or you are not, but you have instead the labels "animal worth protecting" and "animal not worth protecting".

sad enough that people don't see this difference...

  5. That is screwed up on their part and I think they are being insensitive. Once a medical clinician loses empathy for life be it human or animal -they need to take a long vacation or get out of the profession.

If I was a client of this group and learned of this -they would lose my business instantly.

  6. Being ridiculed is reaching the point of being ridiculous.

  7. no you are not....

that was very inhuman way of killing the rat....

  8. No!

You are never too much of an animal lover! :)

  9. I would have the same reaction! If your going to kill a mouse, do it quickly and painless.

My question is.... Why not get a trap where it does not kill them, but just traps them? WHY do we insist on killing things that are so much smaller, more helpless and innocent? I know I have killed a mouse or two in my lifetime, but why?

I am not that much of an animal lover, BUT I do think this way sometimes. I just dont get it.

  10. Thats so sad. Ive heard of glue traps and I hate them. People go to vets with mice, guinea pigs,rabbits..only mice? Techniqule people have them as pets and if some of the people that go there knew about these glue traps theyd never return. You're not a bad person or overreacting. Your 100% right and the boss' sister should not be working there. Vet places should be run by animal lovers. Thats the whole reason vets became what they are, to help animals. Theres this new thing that you can get--i saw it on a commercial. It doesnt hurt the animal..it simply drives them away. Its some sort of plug thingy. Im sorry I cant remember the name. Maybe if you can come up with a solution so that theres no suffering then you will have done a fabulous deed =]

  11. I would not trust a vet that set up glue traps for mice.  "They're ONLY mice" leads to "they're ONLY dogs/cats/etc.".

You could suggest using live traps (that trap, but don't kill the mice so that you can release them later), but if your boss doesn't seem to care then I don't know what you can do about it other than find another vet to work for (if the situation is that severe).

I don't think its absurd to think about the suffering of a mouse.  I think its absurd not to think about the suffering of a mouse.

  12. NO, I think those glue traps are horrible.  I hate them!  I walked a mouse out of my house once, it was really cute, he just followed the wall and my husband opened the door and out he went.  I don't think they should be allowed to sell those, it's awful and I would say something about how it's bothering you to the boss.  Are you close to them?  Would they fire you if you removed them?  Good luck and it's not too much at all!  I feel so bad now, I hate those things.

  13. You son of a gun! How dare you be concerned for the welfare of the mouse. It has no feelings. Much like myself.

  14. Not absurd at all! i feel the same way about all animals and believe that they should all have fair treatment. That is very inhumane practice, i feel sorry for the little guys!

  15. these people sound like pricks.....why don't you glue them down to the point of starvation!

  16. That girl is gonna taste my blade.

    I agree with you.

That girl is an inhumane self centered snot faced bullshit sucking dumbass. you tell her that i said that

  17. You obviously dont know how the world work. IF you have time to sympathize, why dont you help other people you see instead?

    -----------

You would cry and pee all over yourself if you knew how life worked. You are asking a lion to show mercy to its prey. Killing for benefit is a natural cycle; how its done is irrelevant. This is part of nature and you should accept it.

  18. No, you aren't too much of an animal lover.  I think it is just that we as a human race seem to have become incredibly arrogant about our superiority.  Many people just don't care about anything that suffers if it isn't human.  We don't realize that we have to share the Earth with animals and without animals we wouldn't even be here.

I think it is great that someone is still out there who is sensitive to the fact that animals can suffer too.
