How can people knowingly do this to an animal?!? It just makes me sick to think that people around the country have pets that they will not take care of.

From the American Humane Association

Pets or Prisoners?

When deputies in Pickens County, Ga., responded to a domestic dispute, they uncovered a horrific scene of animal neglect and cruelty that shocked even the most seasoned officers.

Thirty-six dogs, most of them covered in filth, were found living -- but only barely living -- at the home in miserable conditions. These poor dogs were severely malnourished, with no water or food bowls in sight.

Many of them ached with every movement they made, while others could barely move at all, partly paralyzed and suffering from infections that had been long left untreated. The deputies even found skeletons and decomposing carcasses of dogs stuffed inside dog food bags scattered around the property.

The county sheriff, who later charged the property owner with 40 counts of animal cruelty, described the situation as the worst case of its kind he had seen in his 28 years on the job. He immediately contacted a local shelter for assistance, and once volunteers arrived to transport the dogs to safety, an amazing thing happened -- the dogs, despite being extremely weak and malnourished, began wagging their tails. It was as if they knew that help had arrived!

Plenty of Love, Not Enough Money

Although the dogs were rescued from immediate danger, their futures were far from certain. Like most animal shelters, the Pickens Animal Rescue, which so compassionately stepped in to care for the dogs, operates on the tightest of budgets. How could it afford the estimated $10,000 it would take to restore the health of so many dogs and ready them for adoption into new, loving homes?

Some of the dogs have already been adopted to caring homes, but the fate of the others is unknown.

  1. That is absolutely terrible! I suggest that you start a found raiser and raise money for those poor poor doggies!! Do your best!!! I will pray for you and the dogs!

  2. awww, that's terrible! :'(

  3. I don't think people like this appreciate their own lives much less the animals they hoard.  It probably started out doing good but the animals piled up & got out of control.  No money & self disgust prevented them from taking proper care of them selves & the animals.

I have been on the rescuing end of these kind of rescues & it is very very disgusting, nasty, horrid,.......no proper word can describe the situations.

  4. you'll never get an answer for that that will justify it.  I hate it too, and its frustrating as h3ll.  Just do what you can for the animals

  5. A few months ago here in Tucson, 800 something (yeah, an 8 with two zeros) chihuahuas were found at this horrible woman's property.  Everyone and their mom has a chihuahua now, but just about all of them were adopted out (after tons of people who couldn't adopt a dog donated money, food, blankets, etc, etc to the shelter to help care for the dogs until they could get placed in homes).  I'm sure the people in the community will come through and help these dogs be treated and find good homes in which to recover.

Lord only knows what makes people treat these wonderful animals like that...

  6. all you can do is pray for the poor dogs and hope for the best. people are always going to do this for money. there will never be enough people to adopt all those dogs. as long as we do what we are capable of doing to help, like take care of our own pets and never give up on the.

kudos to you for caring but we'll just have to hope for the best for now. <3
