Question:

Animal poisoning again in Greece?!

Like every year Athens is in the spotlight of gruesome animal poisonings.

How do you feel about it? Do you think that the communities are doing enough?

What has your local community done to solve the problem?

  1. In our local community no one poisons animals, fortunately, quite the opposite, in every building there is someone who feeds them and they are the fattest cats of Athens. Probably this is why no one dares harm them, because there are many of us who keep an eye on them at all times. But I hope whoever harms animals is caught and punished severely.

  2. Animal control is a very difficult issue. Countries like Greece and Turkey donot collect stray animals into compounds, wait for a specific period of time and then put them down. The population would react to this, I think.

But we donot spare the necessary funds to collect all of them and neuter/spay them, either. So, when stray animals multiply and health concerns arise, many municipalities choose the easy way and poison them in secret. I don't know about Greek laws, but this is a crime in Turkey. Do they care? No. Do we react? Yes. But what can you do, it is a facit circle!

Which do you think is more cruel? Kill them on a regular basis in compounds or kill them time to time in the streets? I don't think there is an absolute correct answer to that.

  3. OK, I can sympathise to a point. I agree that something humane must be done. However, I have been chased along the streets of Athens (back when I could run) by a pack of about 30, very large and wild dogs. I was terrified! I called around, trying to find a solution. Nothing. I was advised to put down poison. I considered it, but when I found out exactly how the poison works (by burning the stomach) I decided not to. I would not have been able to live with myself. However, if I had a small child, I would have done it.

There should be an organised animal control.
