This was in 2003, what must the situation be like now?

There is a war raging in the Zimbabwean bush and the wildlife is losing.

Eighty per cent of the animals have been killed

Poaching of wild animals on the formerly white-owned ranches is out of control.

"We estimate that 80% of the animals that lived on commercial game farms have been killed in the past three years," says one expert.

Hundreds of ranches have been taken over by settlers and so-called war veterans.

In the dry bush country of the Gwayi Valley, anti-poaching patrols are overwhelmed.

Every day they find animals that have stumbled into wire snares and are suffocating to death.

Endangered species

Much of the poaching is at a subsistence level; desperate people looking for something to eat in a country that is running out of food.

But the poachers' snares kill indiscriminately; trapping valuable animals like the sable antelope, which

  1. we can conserve animals as we know some animals r killed by natural disasters but r we aware that we too kill animals though hunting.like lions, leopard.tiger help us in balancing env. animals.

  2. Zimbabwe is not the only African country were wildlife is in danger.  In other African countries it is the developers that destroy nature.  In war torn countries little thought is given to wildlife.

    There are three  solutions.

The first one is education (if possible)

Tourists should make it clear that they value countries with a healthy conservation programme. - They should boycott countries with poor conservation policies.

Perhaps there should be a kind of global reward for the African country that has the best conservation policy.

In Africa Money is power (together with owning  property) and it is the only language people understand.

  3. this is a prime example of communism at work

  4. Ridiculous, I know, I agree.  It is an issue with many ways to look at it.  As far as the people who kill these animals.  Why wouldn't they?  This usually happens in poor countries and these poachers are motivated by the fact that it is the quickest way to make money for their families.  And to take it even further, there are rich people who buy the stuff.  Now that is what kills me.  These people are educated and are doing this for pure evil purposes.

I thought about this a long time when I was in the jungle of Peru where poaching is a way of life for poor people.  And they are poor, terribly poor.  Our best bet is to start with the children.  We took many crafts that had animals and had the students to those.  We talked about how pretty they were and how they worked in the environment.  This was just a few days time but it made think how important it is to start there.  These little ones could grow up to be poachers or environmentalists.

Obviously, laws don't work.  People have to learn what is right and wrong on their own.

  5. let them die just like we all will in the long run

  6. It's just too depressing to even think about. Everyone always goes on about the human cost but never the animals. And they have not brought any of this upon themselves. Human beings are mostly selfish creatures who think they have the right to own this planet. Maybe animals will be better off when they are all extinct so humans will not be able to make them suffer any more.

  7. These stories are sadly common now. The animals suffer when the people are forced to do anything to survive. If we didn't have so many people in the world competing for a limited amount of resources we wouldn't have problems like this on such a horrendous scale.

  8. what?

you can look at a situation like this and post a question about the animals?

its a shame but what about the people being killed? from my own personal point of view i worry more about them than the animals.
