Anime predicated upon works of literature ?

Besides Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Complex (The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger) are there other anime series or films based upon works of literature (not manga ) ?

    The  search spat out every Anime series that has any kind of text based relative (from small market light novels, to classical text, etc.).
