Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar move up the ranks of Mission Hills World Cup Asian Qualifying
India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar and Anirban Lahiri have now soared to third position in the Omega Mission Hills World Cup Asian Qualifying after their strong performance on the second day here at Seri Selangor Golf Club. The duo has been playing to qualify for
the World Cup for the first time and now have reasonable chances to qualify for the same.
“You always walk away from a round thinking you could do better and today was one of those rounds. Both of us deserved to play a better round,” said Lahiri.
Bhullar and Lahiri shot an amazing 69 on the second day to edge past the rest of the teams in the competition. They started off the day settled for the fifth place and have now soared to third through the halfway mark.
Bhullar said, “We made a couple of mistakes yesterday but after playing 36 holes, we are quite comfortable with each other and our yardages. We can go really low in the four ball format. Anirban played and putted very well. There’s no point going aggressive
on every single hole. We can still make birdies with lay ups and short irons.”
Lahiri and Bhullar, both are one of the most notable players who have managed to come out from India, where Lahiri has won the Panasonic Masters and Bhullar has won twice on the Asian Tour. The teams of two players each from different countries will participate
in the event at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China.
Omega came out to be the official sponsor of the event in 2007 and since then the tournament is called as the Omega Mission Hills World Cup. The event has been held in continuation since 1953 and started off by the name The Canada Cup, but was renamed as
the World Cup in 1967.
The format was a 36 holes Stroke Play event until it was turned into a 72-hole event in 1954 and has remained that way since then. US teams have led the cup so far and have won nine times internationally to remain at the top.
